Picking the right tool chest means understanding what your workshop actually needs, not just buying the one with the most drawers. This guide covers our top picks by use case and budget, followed by a plain-English explanation of the different storage types and what separates a well-built unit from one that will give you trouble after a year of use. Current prices are shown on each product page. Free delivery applies to UK mainland addresses.
Our top picks
Best entry-level combination: American PRO 6 Drawer Topchest and Rollcab
Available in black, red/grey, green/grey, blue, and purple/grey.
The most practical starting point for a home garage or light workshop. You get a matched 3-drawer topchest and 3-drawer rollcab on castors, both with ball bearing slides. The steel is thinner than the professional-grade units, but the slides are the feature that matters most for day-to-day use and these hold up well. If you are equipping a garage for the first time and want to spend sensibly without buying something you will regret, start here. View Combination →
Best value with tools included: Siegen 3 Drawer Portable Tool Chest with 98-Piece Tool Kit
The right buy if you need both storage and a hand tool collection in one purchase. The 98-piece kit covers the basics for automotive maintenance and general workshop tasks. The chest itself is a compact 3-drawer unit, so this is not a long-term solution for a fully-equipped workshop, but as a first purchase or a van kit it offers good value. Buying a comparable tool kit separately would typically cost more than the price difference between this and an empty chest. View Tool Chest →
Best mid-range rollcab: Draper Roller Tool Cabinet, 7 Drawer
Draper is a well-established UK brand and this 26-inch, 7-drawer rollcab is a straightforward, solid unit at a competitive price. Ball bearing slides throughout, a cylinder lock, and a finish that handles workshop use without drama. If you need a standalone rollcab at the mid-level and want a name you already know, this is the one. The 9-drawer version is also available if you need more drawer capacity. View Rollcab →
Best mid-range combination with room to grow: American PRO 13 Drawer Topchest and Rollcab
If you know you will fill a 6-drawer unit quickly, the 13-drawer American PRO stack is worth the extra spend over the entry-level set. More drawer capacity means you can keep hand tools and power tool accessories separated without running out of space. A meaningful step up in storage without moving into professional-grade pricing. Best for a growing tool collection: Superline PRO 7 Drawer Rollcab
Also available in black and multiple other colours.
The Superline PRO range is where build quality makes a noticeable difference over the American PRO line. Heavier gauge steel, better powder coat, and a more substantial feel under load. The 7-drawer rollcab is the most popular single unit in the range and works well both as a standalone and as the base for a topchest addition later. View Rollcab →
Best push-to-open combination: Superline PRO Push-To-Open 11 Drawer Topchest and Rollcab
Available in green and orange.
The push-to-open system removes the need for handles entirely. Each drawer opens with a press on the front panel, which is useful if you regularly work with gloves on and gives the chest a cleaner look if workshop aesthetics matter. The 11-drawer configuration across the combination provides serious storage capacity. View Combination →
Best professional rollcab: Premier Heavy-Duty Rollcab 675mm, 6 Drawer
Also available in stainless steel.
The Premier Heavy-Duty range is the top tier in our stock. Heavier steel construction than either the American PRO or Superline PRO lines, with tighter tolerances on the drawers and a more robust locking bar. This is the unit used in professional garages, MOT centres, and commercial workshops that need storage to last without maintenance. The stainless steel version is the right choice for marine environments, food production, or anywhere with chemical or moisture exposure that would corrode powder-coated steel over time. Best retro-style combination: Premier Retro Style 10 Drawer Topchest, Mid-Box and Rollcab
Available in cream, black, and blue with white stripes.
If the workshop doubles as a showroom or you want something that looks different from a standard red or black chest, the Premier Retro range is worth considering. The cream with silver drawer pulls is the most distinctive finish. Build quality is solid and it is a genuine 10-drawer three-piece stack, not a cosmetic compromise. Also available as individual topchest, mid-box, and rollcab units if you want to build the stack gradually. View Combination →
Best for integrated charging: Superline PRO Black Edition 12 Drawer Combination with Power Strip
Also available as a 17-drawer version.
The Black Edition range builds a power strip directly into the topchest. If you charge cordless tools at the bench, this removes the extension lead from the equation and keeps the workspace tidy. The 12-drawer combination covers most professional storage requirements, and the 17-drawer version suits a larger tool inventory. Both are finished in black with the Black Edition branding. Best large workshop setup with tool kit: Superline PRO 15 Drawer Combination with 446-Piece Tool Kit
The most complete package in our range for a new workshop that needs to be fully operational from day one. The 446-piece kit covers sockets, spanners, screwdrivers, pliers, hex keys, and more. Buying the storage and tools separately at comparable quality would cost considerably more. View Combination →
Best full professional setup: Superline PRO 14 Drawer Combination with 446-Piece Tool Kit
Available in multiple colours.
At this level you are looking at a permanent workshop fixture. The 14-drawer configuration stores a complete professional tool inventory across the topchest and rollcab, and the included 446-piece tool kit is a full professional-grade hand tool set. This is the setup used in busy garages where the chest sees daily use and needs to hold up without issue. The Premier 14-drawer combination with 1,233-piece tool kit is also available if you want the Premier build quality and a larger tool kit. View Combination →
Best for maximum security: Superline PRO Black Edition Hutch Mobile Trolley with Locker, 15 Drawer
Also available in green.
The top of our range. The hutch configuration adds a raised storage section above the main chest, the integrated locker provides a separate secure compartment within the unit, and the mobile trolley design puts everything on heavy-duty castors. 15 drawers in total. This is the choice for a professional workshop where security, capacity, and a clean layout all matter. View Trolley →
What to look for when buying a tool chest
Drawer slides
The most important factor for long-term usability. Friction slides (plain metal on metal) work initially but become stiff and unreliable as the chest ages and loads up with tools. Ball bearing slides extend fully, handle heavier loads without binding, and stay smooth over years of use. Every unit in our range uses full-extension ball bearing slides.
Steel gauge
Thicker steel means a heavier chest but better resistance to dents and flex when drawers are fully loaded. Consumer-grade storage uses thinner gauge steel that can bow under heavy tool loads, causing drawers to bind. The Premier Heavy-Duty range uses heavier gauge steel than either the American PRO or Superline PRO lines, which is the primary reason for the price difference.
Width
Standard rollcabs are typically 660mm to 760mm wide. Wide-body units in the Superline PRO Heavy-Duty and Premier Heavy-Duty ranges run from around 1000mm to 1845mm. Wide-body makes sense in a fixed workshop with wall space to spare. Standard-width units are more manageable in a smaller garage or if the chest needs to move between locations.
Drawer depth and configuration
Drawer count alone tells you very little. A 7-drawer rollcab with shallow drawers may store fewer tools than a 5-drawer unit with a mix of shallow and deep drawers. Look for whether the spec includes a deep bottom drawer, which is essential if you are storing power tools, impact wrenches, or larger hand tools.
Types of tool storage explained
Topchest sits on a workbench or on top of a rollcab. Designed for hand tools at eye level. Not freestanding on the floor.
Rollcab is a freestanding cabinet on castors. Handles heavier tools and can be moved around the workshop. Usually includes a full-length locking bar or cylinder lock.
Mid-box sits between the topchest and rollcab in a stacked configuration. Adds capacity without increasing the footprint. Can also be used standalone as a portable chest.
Combination set is a matched topchest and rollcab sold together. Guarantees the same width, finish, and locking system across both units.
Modular cabinet lets you configure the layout to fit your workshop. The Superline PRO Modular Cabinet 5 Drawer 680mm can be used standalone or arranged alongside other modular units.
Site box is designed for outdoor and construction use. Heavy-gauge steel with reinforced locking bars. Not a substitute for a workshop rollcab but the right choice for on-site tool security.
Truck box mounts in the bed of a pickup or flatbed van. Weatherproof seals and steel construction. Available in widths from 910mm to 1275mm.
Tool Vault is a high-security standalone unit with heavier gauge construction and a more substantial locking system than a standard rollcab. Designed to stay in one place rather than be moved regularly.
All units are available with free delivery to UK mainland addresses. If you are not sure which option is right for your workshop, get in touch and we can help you work it out.
